Loved the secretariat story as a metaphor for the unseen authoring the visible forms of our relationships. Very well done, but I didn't see the "keep your financial relationships shallow" idea coming. A surprising and intriguing twist. I came to visit your site after seeing you generously commenting on so many other substacks. Inspired to see you practicing the generosity you preach! Kudos James.
Hi Rick, Great to hear from you. Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. I love reading others' Substacks and seeing their contribution to the world. Many dimensions of my life are on overdrive right now (work/family/vacation), and I'm finding it hard to write - so one way of staying connected is to contribute to others.
Interestingly, I used the Invisible essay as a letter to my clients and modified the ending - adding that one deep and personal relationship can be valuable for clients - that being an investment advisor/partner who gets them, cares for them, and can do things for them that they might not otherwise do for themselves. At some point - I may go update the public story you read.
On a more personal note - I would love to connect with you sometime if you're up for a 30-minute Zoom call. I, too, am aware of your presence and would love to hear more about your business and the keynotes that you give. I'd love to hear if you'd find that valuable too.
James, thank you for bringing all these pieces together. I really liked the Harvard study and the practices we can take every day to deepen our love for those we share deep relationships. I have also seen how acks of kindness, generosity, patience, and forgiveness create love in unexpected and unlikely situations. So maybe we can create a deep relationship with anyone we are directly engaging with in this moment if we are fully present. Keep them coming!
Rich, I love the perspective you offer on how any relationship can be a deep one by being fully present in the moment. Thank you for taking the time to share.
Secretariat's story was interesting and, while I knew of the legend, I was unaware of his heart size. My first thought was that it was abnormally large based on medical enhancements, such as steroids, that were probably not yet tested for. Suspicious through and through. I was then pleasantly surprised by the next section on relationships and being an invisible author of health through our healthy relationships with others.
It was a welcome reminder that all of the "soccer mom" friendships that are formed on the sidelines or benches of any sporting event or activity that my kids do are really meaningful connections!!! Initially formed to pass the time or inquire about some penalty that I do not understand, these have developed into some of my most meaningful connections and some of my best allies in parenting. Thank you for prompting that appreciation. Speaking of gratitude... thank you for taking care of my shallow market relationships so I may focus on the others!
Kris, Great to hear from you and thank you for taking the time to share! Your sharing made me thing that all relationships start out with chance interactions at first and then both parties consciously decide how deep they wish to take the relationship over time. I miss you and wish we didn't live on opposite coasts!
What a wonderful, thoughtful perspective on wealth and investing as a relationship with heart! Really enjoyed this piece, plus the trivia on Secretariat - you've got me thinking about my investing mindset!
Thank you again Kirsten - for your contribution to me and to my essay. I saw your notes and think the feedback was spot on. I look forward to staying in touch.
